Accommodation Information

CPLED is committed to providing programs that are accessible and barrier-free.

We recognize that some students may face barriers to full participation. Students who experience barriers due to a characteristic protected under applicable Human Rights legislation are entitled to reasonable accommodation.

The purpose of accommodation is to ensure fairness while maintaining the integrity, security, and standards of CPLED programs. Accommodations are determined on an individual basis and implemented through a collaborative process between CPLED and the student.

Applying for

Accommodation

Students are strongly encouraged to submit an Application for Accommodation as early as possible. The process takes time, including:

  • Gathering supporting documentation, such as medical records or prior accommodation history.
  • CPLED’s review and implementation, which may involve technical or logistical adjustments.

Applications must clearly establish grounds for accommodation and include supporting documentation. CPLED may request additional information after submission. Typically, at least two weeks are required to process applications from submission to implementation, so applications should be submitted at least two weeks before the accommodation is needed.

If circumstances arise unexpectedly (e.g., a car accident), CPLED will work with the student to develop an accommodation strategy. However, short notice may limit what can be implemented.

To apply, review the Accommodation Policy and submit the application form. For medically based accommodations in PREP, consult the PREP Medical Accommodations Guidelines before applying.

Capstone Accommodation Deadlines

Deadlines for Capstone accommodations differ due to the complexity of this high-stakes assessment. These deadlines are listed on the Program Schedule page.

Important

Information about Accommodations

  • If a student requests accommodation, CPLED will keep all information strictly confidential. Details will only be used and disclosed for the purpose of considering or administering the accommodation.

  • Students are encouraged to self-identify individual needs; however, requesting accommodation is entirely the student’s decision. Accommodation requests are based on human rights-protected grounds, which include more than medical conditions or disabilities. If your grounds are not health-related, follow the same application process but omit medical documentation.

  • CPLED does not have an accessibility advisor on staff and therefore does not provide advice or recommendations regarding accommodation options. CPLED staff can outline possible options based on your request and program schedule, but the choice remains with the student.

  • If your current accommodation no longer meets your needs, contact accommodations@cpled.ca to discuss potential changes. If adjustments are required during an evaluation (such as the Capstone), CPLED will review and attempt to implement necessary changes. However, short notice may limit what can be accommodated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for accommodation?

Complete and return the Application for Accommodation available on our Policies and Forms page, along with any supporting documentation. Please note that there are separate forms for PREP and LRW students.

Students who identify a need for accommodation during the registration process are still required to submit a completed Application for Accommodation.

What documentation do I need to provide?

Supporting documentation is important to help CPLED staff understand the type of accommodations which will enable a student’s full participation in their program. When reviewing and requesting what to provide with their application, students should provide:

  • Information and documentation which supports a current need for accommodation.
  • Evidence of any past accommodations which enabled full participation in school or at work.

Students are requested to provide as much information as possible to facilitate an appropriate accommodation. CPLED does not assess medical conditions, so we rely on documentation from other professionals to determine the type of accommodation which will meet students’ needs. This means it is essential to have the professional completing the medical portion of the application review the form carefully and include as much detail as possible regarding the accommodation needed.

Can I apply before my program starts?

Yes, as long as you are registered for a CPLED program, you can apply for accommodation before your program starts.

Who can I contact with questions?

Students can contact accommodations@cpled.ca with all accommodation inquiries.
